Original Madras Trading Company was founded in the 1970s in New York by Prasan Shah, an immigrant from Madras, India, where Madras fabric has historically been made. Madras refers to a lightweight, handwoven cotton fabric, yarn-dyed, and featuring a checked pattern. The brand has since expanded its range of fabrics, offering other handwoven textiles inspired by the rich history of Madras textiles. However, the brand’s creator is also influenced by American culture, with designs inspired by the look of American college students.
