Original Madras Trading Company was founded in the 1970’s in New York City by Prasan Shah, an immigrant from Madras, the city in India where Madras fabric is historically made. Madras refers to a lightweight, hand-woven, yarn-dyed cotton fabric with a checkered pattern. The brand has meanwhile expanded its range of fabrics and offers other handwoven fabrics that build on the rich history of Madras textiles. However, the brand’s designer is also influenced by American culture, his designs are inspired by the look of American college students.
